Just when you think we’re making progress.

No, it’s noreal-newst what you think!

A friend shared a conversation she had with a colleague of hers earlier this week. The business she works at had a low performing employee who recently quit. My friend mentioned in passing to her colleague that this was a perfect opportunity to finally source and hire a person who was high performance and who could achieve excellence in their work. The response back was incredible to hear. Her colleague actually said – and I’m not making this up – “I don’t want excellence in the next new hire, I just want someone who will do what I tell them to do.”

For my friend – the work setting is the 21st century, that’s what the calendar says, but the environment is closer to the 1940’s. Here’s looking at you kid, hire for mediocrity and the corporate culture will surely reflect it. The “Just Do, Don’t Think” mentality doesn’t work in the 21st century and for high performing organizations – it never existed in the first place. Just when you think we’re making progress!
