Plato and the four cardinal virtues

Do you live the Virtuous Leader’s Credo?

  • I bring out the greatness of others.
  • I pull rather than push.
  • I teach rather than command.
  • I inspire rather than berate.
  • I empower people and draw out that which lies within them.
  • I take pleasure in being of service and cultivating altruistic motives.
  • I practice inclusion. I solicit, acknowledge, and make use of the contributions of all team members of the organization in solving problems.
  • I encourage team members to voice their opinions.
  • I do everything I can to strengthen the commitment of the team members to the shared mission.
  • I draw out the reticent, encourage the domineering to yield, help pessimists to see the positive side, urge all team members to question conventional wisdom.
  • If a decision made against my advice proves mistaken, I avoid saying ”I told you so”.
  • participate enthusiastically in the implementation of all decisions- even those I initially opposed
  • I practice collegiality. I develop in each team member a sense of freedom and of personal responsibility. I want everyone to participate in making decisions, and everyone to respond to them.
  • I delegate power because I want team members to grow by experiencing freedom, power, creativity and responsibility
  • I promote my organization rather than myself.
  • I do not make myself irreplaceable. I share information and I create the conditions for others to bring our work to a successful conclusion.
  •  I identify, develop, and nurture future leaders to pave the way for succession.

The “Virtuous Leadership Creedo” was pulled from notes that I took during a workshop given by Alexandre Havard, author of Virtuous Leadership, Created for Greatness and From Temperament to Character. For more information go to: https://hvli.org/
