Here’s a very simple idea that will impact your productivity greatly. This is important because your productivity is directly related to your income.
There are so many great sources of information available to us all via the Internet. Personal development info, news on your specific industry, entertainment, local, state, national and world news. It streams in non-stop as much or as little as you allow. So here’s a way to channel all this information so it’s ready when you are!
Ready? This is really simple. Create a second email. Use any service you want, gmail, hotmail etc. Just don’t use your work email. This separates what is truly important (work) from the interesting but not so important information that you may want and have allowed to stream into your life and in some cases – may have overtaken your life.
I did not add my second “Internet information” account on my mobile devices. This helps me stay focused on my daily work tasks at hand. This second account is only on my home / work PC. Think of it as creating a library for your use, when you have time to sit down in your study and actually read.
Set it up in a way that works best for you, but remember the idea is to create at least two email “channels” – one for work, one for everything else. You may even want to create multiple channels; work emails, work related news and information and personal interest.
As you re-subscribe or change your email preferences to your new, Internet Information” email account, discern if you really read what comes your way. Delete the feeds you never ever get around to reading. Remember this is all about guarding your time which is the only limited resource you have at your disposal.
This system is working great for me since I moved (or removed) the newsletters and other css feeds off my work email account. The information I like and need is still there when I need it and the interruptions (the distracting noise!!) throughout the day have stopped!
